For example, the "Forest of No Return" is an area with betrayal stories and a dark tone. Each area in the game has a different theme that reflects to different stories and narrative. The player can roam through vast countrysides, explore billowing fields, tranquil shrines, ancient forests, villages, stark mountain-scapes, bamboo forests to the urban center of ornate castles. Some villages have semi-aquatic paddy fields to grow crops such as rice and taro. The landscape is primarily covered by coniferous and deciduous forests along with grass lands. In Ghost of Tsushima, the island is downsized by a scale of 1:25 and the geography is much more varied than its real life counterpart, with significantly more drastic terrain and differences in climate. The estimated in-game world size is 18.75 km 2 (7.5 x 2.5) for the North Island and 9.87 km 2 (4.6 x 2.1) for the South Island. Many civilians were killed and villages burned to the ground. The Mongols wreak havoc and conquer the local population. In Ghost of Tsushima, the fictional Mongol general Khotun Khan leads the invasion of Tsushima. Only 80 samurai stood against thousands of invaders. Lord Shimura was the jito (lord) of Tsushima. The game takes place in 1274, at the start of the first Mongol Invasion of Japan. Regular activities were halted during the medieval invasions of the Mongol Empire.

You’ll infiltrate lots of Mongol camps (whether by stealth or standoff), follow footprints to track people and animals down, and charge through open fields for large-scale battles. While the context of every quest varies, the content feels very familiar.

Two new Mythic Tales are also awesome, and have especially worthwhile rewards – even to someone like me, who already had 100% completion in the base game. That includes archery challenges, animal sanctuaries, playable flashbacks, and a handful of sidequests. Many of these landmarks are identical to the kind of thing found in the main campaign, like bamboo shoots, hot springs, lighthouses, and Haiku Spots, but there are plenty of entertaining new distractions to discover, too.

Once again you begin with a map that’s almost completely blank and are free to set out in any direction to discover its many landmarks, areas of interest, and some of the coolest Easter eggs I’ve seen in a while. But story aside, the best part about this expansion is the whole new island to explore.
